Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing & Urban Development (APMCHUD): 3rd Bureau Meeting, Seoul, Korea

The 3rd Meeting of the 3rd Bureau of APMCHUD was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea on Friday 28 October, 2011. Fiji is one of the eight (8) APMCHUD member countries including Indonesia, Iran, India, Iraq, Jordan, Republic of Korea and Pakistan endorsed by the 3rd Ministerial conference of APMCHUD held in Indonesia in June 2010 to be members of the 3rd Bureau. The Bureau is tasked to review working group updates on the five (5) key thematic areas identified by the 69 member countries of APMCHUD as common regional challenges to sustainable urbanisation and provision of adequate housing needs. These challenges when addressed, will ensure social and economic sustainability in the region through the delivery of affordable housing, proper infrastructure and services in countries across the region.

Reference was made to Fiji’s history of housing policies and Government initiatives to provide affordable and safe houses for our people. The streamlining of Fiji Government Policies including its housing policies under Fiji’s Strategic Framework for Change has also incorporated MDG targets for this sector. Fiji’s direct participation at the 3rd Bureau and at the large APMCHUD projects Fiji further in the international arena and allows an opportunity to share with international partners Fiji’s resolve to provide affordable and safe houses for our people. First Secretary Mr Ulaiasi Ravula of the Embassy of Fiji in Japan attended the 3rd Bureau Meeting on behalf of Fiji’s Minister for Local Govt, Housing & Urban Development Mr Saumatua and Fiji’s Ambassador to Japan and the Republic of Korea HE Mr Mataitoga.
