2011 UNITAR Series on Sea & Human Security Workshop (18 - 21 October, 2011)

The 2011 Workshop in the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Series on Sea & Human Security was held at the University of Tokyo main campus from 18 – 21 October, 2011 in partnership with the University of Tokyo Ocean Alliance department, United Nations University, Hiroshima University, Nippon Foundation and the Ocean Policy Research Foundation. The workshop examined responses, lessons learned and policy development and implementation following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and key issues emerging from the Response and Recovery phases of the March 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami that struck the East coast of Japan. One of the highlights of the workshop was the practical exercises highlighting the necessity of a comprehensive approach to Ocean and Human Security based on lessons learned and best practices derived from the two major disasters mentioned here that can ably serve as guides to policy development and implementation models for nations at risk from similar devastations.

International participants from India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines were joined by representatives from Diplomatic Missions in Japan.
