Consultation with Sugar Industry Officials, OkinawaThe Ambassador held consultations with officials of Shonan Sugar Co. Ltd and Japan Centrifugal Sugar Industry whilst visiting Okinawa from 1 – 3 September, 2011. Fiji is interested to study the small Sugar Cane Mills and sugar cane farming sector of the Okinawa economy as part of Fiji’s sugar industry reform agenda and the support service sector to the sugar industry. The consultation is based on similarities between Okinawa and Fiji where both have tourism and the sugar industry as the drivers of their economy. The concept of having small sugar mills closer to growers contributes to the high yield in sugar production for the Okinawa Sugar Industry. The Embassy observes that this concept if successfully integrated into the Fiji Sugar Industry will minimise expenses for cane growers whose farms are remotely located but with high potentials for production of raw cane. The concept of decentralising small sugar mills will encourage cane cultivation and the fully utilisation of available cane farm land noting that Fiji has a rich history of cane cultivation.
