Day two (2) of the President’s Visit to Tokyo: Visit to Japanese Renewable Energy Processing Plants, Yokohama, Japan (22 June 2011)

His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau on 22 June 2011 visited the Kawasaki Biomass Power Plant located in Kawasaki, Yokohama. The visit was organized by the Fiji Mission in Tokyo and officials of the Kawasaki Biomass Power Plant to view clean and renewable energy processing methods utilised at the plant. His Excellency was accompanied by Ambassador Isikeli Mataitoga, the Official Secretary Mr Joeli Rokovada and other officials. His Excellency was received by the President of the Kawasaki Biomass Power Plant Mr Hiroaki Togawa and Mr Hiroshi Murakami the Plant General Manager together with Fiji Dream Co Ltd officials. His Excellency was given a conducted tour of the Plant followed with a detail briefing from Plant Officials on its operation. Discussions also focused on the company’s plan to set up a similar plant in Fiji. It was noted in the discussion the potentials for biomass energy processing in Fiji given the availability of fuel in Fiji in the form of wood material and other vegetation being critical components of biomass power processing.

The President was impressed with the two concepts adopted by the Kawasaki Biomass Power Plant for generating power, first from raw materials many may consider as waste and secondly from using available resources as  opposed to the need to plant special species of plants as fuel for similar power generation. The Fiji Mission in Tokyo has been consulting the Kawasaki Biomass Power Plant management since March this year.  This is consistent with Fiji Government’s initiatives to reduce fossil fuel import costs through the introduction of clean and renewable energy sources.
