Ambassador calls on the President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

The Ambassador on Monday 13th June 2011 paid a courtesy visit to the President, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Dr Sadako Ogata at the JICA Headquarters, Tokyo ahead of the JICA President’s visit to the Pacific from 19 – 24 June, 2011. The JICA President is expected to visit Tuvalu and Fiji. Madame Ogata expressed her gratitude to Fiji for hosting the JICA Regional Office for the Pacific and noted as well Fiji’s importance in being the hub for other International Regional Office(s). The JICA President during the coming visit is keen to see how well and effective JICA delivers its assistance and will make sure that JICA activities meet the actual needs of the people.

A brief on Fiji’s political process and in particular major reforms that will allow and facilitate good and fair governance was provided by the Ambassador. The JICA President was also provided a brief on the recently established Fiji (Rotuma Island)/Tuvalu trade assistance particularly on food crops and other food products grown and cultivated in Rotuma, Fiji. Close to nine (9) tonnes of ‘taro’ (a staple food in Pacific Island countries) have been exported to Tuvalu under this scheme.
