Tokyo University of Agriculture Graduation

DR VISONI MOTOFAGA TIMOTE, graduated Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.D] in Agricultural Science from Tokyo University, Tokyo, Japan on 21 March 2010. This is a great achievement for this quite and humble man from Noatau, Rotuma. Tokyo University is one of the top academic institution of learning in all of Japan.

A great and humble journey that began, back in Rotuma in 1972 where he was born, before coming to Suva for Secondary School education at Dudley High School. From there to the University of the South Pacific, Alafua Campus where he gained his Bachelor of Agricultural Science Degree, before coming to Tokyo, Japan on a Japanese Government Scholarship, six years ago for Masters and finally a Doctorate degree in Agricultural Science. It is a journey of hope and faith.

Hope because despite his humble personal circumstances, Dr Timote, dared to dream of achieving academic excellence in his chosen field of study. That dream, dreamt a long time ago became a reality on the 21 March 2010, when he was officially bestowed, at Tokyo University, with the highest academic degree in his field – A Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Science with specialisation in Plant Pathology.

What a challenge Dr Timote has placed before our young men and women of Fiji, who may follow his footsteps. The challenge is that despite your poor beginning, you may dare to dream and be prepared to make the sacrifice to achieve your ultimate goal.

I was blessed to witness this real life story unfold, as my wife and I were invited to Dr Timote’s graduation ceremony as his guests. We were privileged. We pray for God’s blessing on his life and his family in Fiji.
